The HawkEar, a brand new local news program with a distinguished journalistic pedigree, airs Thursday, February 2, 2012, on WIUP-FM.

The radio show is produced by IUP Journalism Department students who are members of the campus chapter of the national Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ). The broadcasts will be archived on the HawkEye online newspaper website, published by the Journalism Department.

The HawkEar is successor to the award-winning Global Alert, one in a series of local news radio shows sponsored by SPJ since 2006.

On Thursday, from 4:00–5:00 p.m., The HawkEar inaugurates its new season on WIUP-FM (90.1) with these stories:

  • A preview of the presidency of Michael A. Driscoll, soon to be sworn in as IUP’s eighth top executive since 2003. Directors of the State System of Higher Education named Driscoll to the position on January 19. Reporter Jake Williams gathers campus reaction.
  • The Indiana Area School District has new members and a new budget crunch. Reporter and producer Sean Yoder reports on recent borough school board actions and previews upcoming debates.
  • Sports: Reporter Chris Galiszewski covers IUP hoops, reviewing Gannon (away) and previewing Clarion (home). Reporter Adam Harring covers pro sports from Pittsburgh to Philly.

The next edition of The HawkEar will air February 16.
