Claire Dandeneau, department chair and professor of Counseling at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, recently announced the call for applications for the newly established Heroes in Helping awards.

These recognitions are aimed at saluting youth in grades 6–12 who have demonstrated exemplary involvement in helping activities related to their schools or communities. Such activities can include peer tutoring/mentoring, volunteer service related to helping others in some way, or activities of raising awareness or prevention regarding a health or well-being issue.

The inaugural awards are jointly sponsored by the College of Education and Educational Technology, the Counselor Education Student Association (Indiana campus), the IUP Counseling Foundation, and the Center for Counselor Training and Services.

“This is a way to truly commend outstanding youth who make valuable contributions to schools and to communities,” said Dandeneau.

Two awards are anticipated. Recipients will be given a $100 giftcard to the Co-op Store on Indiana’s IUP campus and a plaque commemorating the award. They will also be formally recognized at the Department of Counseling Celebration Banquet at Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex on April 20, 2012. Other awards will be given to Department of Counseling students and alumni that evening to honor their contributions and achievements.

Complete application guidelines can be found on the Department of Counseling website. The deadline for applications is March 20, 2012.
