Music in the Civil War

A new display featuring vintage Civil War wind instruments and artifacts will be on display in the Orendorff Music Library during the Spring 2012 semester. The instruments and artifacts are on loan courtesy of J.B. and Donna Salter of Erie, Pennsylvania.

The display includes examples of uniforms worn by Confederate and Union bandsmen, authentic Crosby battlefield fifes, a Lyon and Healy bass horn, an August Pollmann cornet, and a sword made by Roby Company, Cincinnati, Ohio, all of which were issued to enlisted musicians in the Union Army.

J.B. Salter is a professional band instrument repairman who owns Presque Isle Brass and Woodwind in Erie. His son, Jack, is a Music major at IUP.
