Seventy-six students from the Business Honors, Fashion Merchandising, and Hospitality Management programs, accompanied by faculty, attended a networking event with alumni in New York City on Thursday and Friday, December 8 and 9, 2011, sponsored by Alumni Services and the Career Development Center.

The event began with a panel discussion attended by various IUP alumni, including Kevin Carrai ’86, Leland Hardy ’84, Sarah Hogue ’09, Stephanie Perry ’88, and Derek White ’82. Students learned how the alumni pursued careers in New York, and what it is like to live and work in the city.

Following the panel discussion, students attended the president’s annual holiday reception at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, where they had the opportunity to meet and network with numerous alumni.

On Friday, students visited businesses where alumni are employed, including hotels, fashion establishments, and business finance companies.

Erin Puko, Grey Berrier, and Brian Foster-Pegg, Business Honors cohort leaders, said that they “had an incredible time learning and exploring” the possibilities of working in New York City.

Kristina Tooley, a Fashion Merchandising student, said that the networking event was “a wonderful experience” that she would recommend to all IUP students.

Students from Hospitality Management, including Michael Gibbons, were able to visit two New York City hotels where alumni Meghan Houseal and Courtney McKenna are employed. Michael thought the trip was a huge success that opened his eyes “to the opportunities I will have in the future,” as well as what it will take for him to be successful after graduation. Hannah Julian agreed, saying she “learned so much with being able to tour different hotels and network with the alumni.”

Madison Sabo, a Hospitality Management senior, summed up the trip by saying, “Although I was extremely exhausted at times, I feel that it was a great opportunity. The networking I have done has already started to benefit me in ways of contacts and advice from professionals in my field.”

Future networking events will take place in Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia during Spring Break, as well as Pittsburgh in April 2012.
