As its next event for the inaugural season of the Ovations! series, the Lively Arts at IUP will present multiple international award-winning Celtic fiddler Eileen Ivers on Tuesday, December 6, 2011. The concert, titled “An Nollaig Christmas”—an Irish Christmas—will begin at 8:00 p.m. in Fisher Auditorium of IUP’s Performing Arts Center.
The program, appropriate for all ages, also includes Ivers’ four-piece band, Immigrant Soul; a quartet of championship step dancers; and the Indiana area’s own gospel choir, the Voices of Joy.
Titled “the Jimi Hendrix of the violin" by the New York Times, Ivers is the daughter of Irish immigrants growing up in the culturally diverse neighborhood of the Bronx, New York. Taking to the fiddle at age nine, Ivers spent many summers in Ireland, where she was trained by Irish fiddler Martin Mulvihill.
After graduating magna cum laude in mathematics from Iona College and continuing her post-graduate work, Ivers found herself reverting back into her music. Competing and winning over thirty medals and nine All-Ireland fiddle championships, she stablished a touring production in 1999 to present the music that now encompasses Immigrant Soul.
In addition to performing for presidents and royalty worldwide, the London Symphony Orchestra, National Symphony at the Kennedy Center, and Boston Pops, she performed as an original musical star of Riverdance and with the Chieftains, Hall and Oates, Sting, Afrocelts, Patti Smith, Paula Cole, Al Di Meola, and Steve Gadd. She is a founding member of Cherish the Ladies and, as an ensemble performer, is a Grammy winner as well.
For “An Nollaig Christmas” to be performed at IUP, the program recalls the warm memories and joy of Christmas in Irish families. Ivers interweaves age-old Wren Day songs and beloved American carols for the holiday performance, including “Hark the Herald Angels Sing,” “Do You Hear What I Hear?,” and more.
Joining on four numbers will be core members of the area's highly popular gospel choir, Voices of Joy. They will be under the direction of Melvin Jenkins.
Providing traditional Irish step dancing will be four championship dancers from Burke Conroy School of Irish Dance of Pittsburgh.
Tickets for the event are available now online at IUP Tickets, by calling the Hadley Union Building box office at 724-357-1313, or purchasing them at the HUB. Tickets range in price from $25 to $30 depending on seating choice, with children, students, and senior citizens receiving reduced prices as low as $14. Any seats remaining will be available at the door starting at 7:00 p.m. the night of the concert.
The Lively Arts is produced by the College of Fine Arts and is funded, in part, by the IUP Student Cooperative Association.
