IUP Punxsutawney students hosted an evening of activities for the “littles” and family members of the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Jefferson County.

The Punxsutawney Living/Learning Center served as a site for meaningful interaction and activity between IUP students and Jefferson County youth and their family members on November 11, 2011. Using the Veterans Day and Thanksgiving holidays as themes, the activities included face painting, games, arts and crafts, and writing letters to men and women away from home on active military duty.

The mentoring attention provided to area youth complemented the opportunity for IUP students to impact young lives in positive ways. Students learned firsthand about the culture and needs of the Punxsutawney community through their interaction with the littles and their families.

The annual IUP Punxsutawney Big Brothers and Sisters event is led by Ms. Theresa Ruffner of the Psychology Department and Ms. Angela Thompson of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Jefferson County. Sixteen first-year students participated in planning and hosting the event, including Kafi King of Mt. Pocono (foreground) and Halle Tharp of Erie (background).
