Crimson Pops Features IUP Performance Ensembles

As part of the Lively Arts’ Sound Choices series, the Department of Music will present Crimson Pops on Wednesday, October 19, 2011, at 7:00 p.m. The performance will be held in Fisher Auditorium of the IUP Performing Arts Center and features student and faculty performers.

Ensembles performing include the IUP Wind Ensemble, resident faculty ensemble the Hoodlebug Brass, Opera and Music Theater Workshops, Dance Theater, Percussion Ensemble, Saxophone Ensemble, and the always-popular IUP Marching Band.

Crimson Pops will feature a variety of popular music ranging from Broadway show tunes to music by composer John Williams. Highlights include music from Rodgers and Hammerstein’s South Pacific performed by the Wind Ensemble, Opera and Music Theater Workshops, and a performance on the Reschini Steinway piano by student Maximillian Esmus of George Gershwin’s “Piano Prelude.”

IUP Band in Review

The IUP Wind Ensemble is under the direction of chair Jack Stamp. A premier group of the department includes the best of the IUP instrumental music program. Music Theater and Opera workshops are under the direction of Sarah Mantel and Mary Logan-Hastings.

The IUP Saxophone Ensemble, under the direction of Keith Young, will perform two pieces, including Charlie Parker’s “Cool Blues.” Dance Theater and the Percussion Ensemble will combine for an encore performance of their popular “Taiko,” first performed for last spring’s dance performance and directed by Holly-Boda Sutton and Michael Kingan.

The concert will end with a finale performance by the IUP Marching Band, under the direction of David Martynuik.

Tickets for the performance are available in advance at the Hadley Union Building or online now at IUP Tickets. Tickets remaining will be sold at the door starting at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 19.

Tickets are $9 regular admission, $8 for senior citizens, and $6 for students and children. Seating is by general admission.
