Theater-by-the-Grove at Indiana University of Pennsylvania will open the 2011–2012 season with the gripping new drama Lindsey’s Oyster, opening October 6.
Performances are slated for October 6–8 and 12–15 at 8:00 p.m., with a matinee on Sunday, October 9, at 2:00 p.m. Performances will be presented on the Waller Hall Mainstage of the IUP Performing Arts Center.
Lindsey’s Oyster is the newest play from award-winning Pittsburgh playwright Tammy Ryan and signals IUP’s inaugural commitment to the National Theatre Conference’s Initiative to Celebrate American Women Playwrights.
The story revolves around a teenage girl and her unintentional pregnancy from a nonconsensual event. Confronting her body as a battleground and the wrenching alienation that her situation entails, she awakens to a profound self-possession and authenticity.
Director Jason Chimonides states, “Lindsey’s Oyster is a play that compassionately explores a host of powerful contemporary issues and themes relevant to young people, young women in particular. It has been said of this generation, a generation that has in many ways grown up online, that the gap between today’s teens and their parents represents the largest since the advent of Rock n’ Roll.”
Chimonides, a member of the IUP theater faculty, goes on to explain, “In 2011, all of the same adolescent yearnings and dangers still exist, but communication technology has amplified their expression and created, in my view, a sometimes morally dissociated social norm. I hope this play will frankly and thoughtfully compel serious reflection on these themes, particularly among our students, and spark constructive ethical dialogue within our community.”
This play contains language and situations to which some audience members may object, and is not recommended for younger children.
