The Lively Arts at Indiana University of Pennsylvania is proud to announce that award-winning actor, dancer, singer, author, and humanitarian Bernadette Peters will open the inaugural season of Ovations!, IUP’s new performing arts series.

She will perform, along with a twenty-eight-piece orchestra, on Thursday, September 15, Monday, May 4, 2012 (originally scheduled for September 15, 2011), at 8:00 p.m. in Fisher Auditorium of IUP’s Performing Arts Center.

Throughout her illustrious career, Peters has dazzled audiences and critics with her performances on stage and television, in concerts, and on recordings. She is one of Broadway’s most critically acclaimed performers, and she has won numerous accolades.

Peters received both the Tony Award and Drama Desk awards for her critically acclaimed performance in the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Song and Dance. She earned her second Tony Award for her performance in Annie Get Your Gun.

She also received Tony nominations for her memorable performances as Momma Rose in Sam Mendes’ critically-acclaimed revival of Gypsy, Neil Simon’s The Goodbye Girl, Stephen Sondheim’s Pulitzer Prize-winning musical Sunday in the Park with George, the Jerry Herman/Gower Champion ode to the movies Mack and Mabel, and the Leonard Bernstein/Comden and Green musical On the Town,

In addition to these honors, Peters earned a Drama Desk nomination for her memorable portrayal of the Witch in Sondheim’s Into the Woods. She has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and recently appeared on Broadway in Sondheim’s A Little Night Music and in Follies at the Kennedy Center.

While Peters is best known for her work in the theater, her career also boasts an impressive list of television credits, including most recently starring in Lifetime TV’s Living Proof and guest-starring roles on ABC-TV’s Grey’s Anatomy and Ugly Betty.

Peters has lit up the silver screen in seventeen films and received a Golden Globe Award for her memorable performance in Pennies From Heaven. Among her other film credits are The Jerk, The Longest Yard, Silent Movie, Annie, Pink Cadillac, Slaves of New York, Woody Allen’s Alice, Impromptu, It Runs in the Family, and the soon-to-be-released independent film Coming Up Roses.

Ms. Peters has recorded six solo albums, including the Grammy-nominated Bernadette Peters Loves Rodgers & Hammerstein; Sondheim, Etc: Bernadette Peters Live at Carnegie Hall; and I’ll Be Your Baby Tonight, in addition to numerous Original Broadway Cast recordings.

Peters devotes much of her time and talents to numerous events that benefit Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. With Mary Tyler Moore, she cofounded Broadway Barks, a very special “pet project.” Each year, Broadway Barks presents a star-studded dog and cat adoption event that benefits shelter animals throughout the New York City area.

Her two children’s books, Broadway Barks (New York Times bestseller) and Stella is a Star, feature original songs written and performed by Peters. All of her proceeds from the publications benefit Broadway Barks.

Tickets for the Fisher Auditorium performance will first be available through subscriptions, with subscription information to be sent by the end of June. Patrons contributing at the Designer level ($250 and above) of the Premiere Club will receive priority seating with their subscription order in advance of general subscribers. Single tickets will be available at the end of August.

The event is presented as part of the Helwig Distinguished Artist program. It is funded by the Wilfred E. Helwig Distinguished Artist Endowment, established in 1988, with additional funds provided by the Helwig family. This will mark the eighteenth Helwig Artist.
