For the second year, the IUP String Project and the IUP Center for Civic Engagement are collaborating with IUP alumna and music teacher Melissa Douglas in the development a new string music program in Central Cambria School District.
While budget cuts put arts programs in jeopardy, Douglas established a new string music program at Jackson Elementary School in Central Cambria County during the 2009–2010 school year.
The IUP String Project and the IUP Center for Civic Engagement have been pleased to support this program for the second year and bring string music education to students who previously did not have the opportunity to play a string instrument.
The IUP String Project, a community string music education outreach program as well as teacher training program for IUP music students, has provided instruction for third-grade students on string instruments by one of its teachers, Greg Dippell, a graduate music student in cello performance. With financial support for travel expenses from the IUP Center for Civic Engagement, Mr. Dippell has traveled each week to teach music to forty-eight young students at Jackson Elementary School.
