Following is a message from John C. Cavanaugh, chancellor of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, to all faculty and staff members of PASSHE institutions:
The past month has given each of us an opportunity to reintroduce PASSHE to the citizens and leadership of the commonwealth. They know that every day we provide high-quality, affordable education for almost 120,000 students and that we have the lowest tuition of all four-year institutions in the commonwealth and the lowest total cost of attendance in the mid-Atlantic region. Through your respectful and thoughtful comments and conversations, they have been reminded of the vital role we play.
In concert with our students—90 percent of whom come from the commonwealth and over 80 percent of whom stay after they graduate—we have focused on the opportunities we provide to people who otherwise might not attend college. I sincerely thank each of you for all you have done, from talking to neighbors, to writing letters, to organizing rallies on your campuses and in Harrisburg.
On this latter point, I especially thank the APSCUF staff and the student government leaders who organized an effective event (complete with relays from Lock Haven and Millersville). All of it has been beyond your normal work, on your own time. The way you did it reflects both PASSHE values and the passion each of you has for providing the highest-quality education possible. Protecting that for our students is and always will be our first priority. Thank you for making that so very clear to everyone in the commonwealth.
With many thanks,John
