The Elephant Café Brown Bag Series presents Dr. Mark McGowan discussing “Violence Risk Assessment in Pediatric Populations: Using a Structured Professional Judgment Model.”
This talk will take place on Friday, April 8, 2011, from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. in Uhler Hall, Room 116.
Dr. McGowan, Ph.D., NCSP, is an assistant professor in the Department of Educational and School Psychology at IUP and coordinator of the School Psychology Certification Program.
McGowan will (a) compare current best-practice approaches for the assessment of generalized violence, (b) describe current conceptualization of violence risk that are derived from empirically based markers for specific types of violence, & (3) analyze the benefits of violence risk assessment for identifying at risk youth as well as guiding intervention efforts to assist them. Contemporary violence risk assessment approaches provide a means for identifying high risk youth and their needs. More importantly, these assessment approaches present opportunities for treatment teams to align services with child specific risk factors. The Structured Professional Judgment model will be discussed as a promising practice for working with youth populations.Department of Psychology
