Closing its 2010-2011 lineup of the Performance Plus series, the Lively Arts at Indiana University of Pennsylvania will welcome the Ben Munisteri Dance Projects on Thursday, April 7, 2011, at 8:00 p.m. in Zink Hall Dance Theater.
The program will feature three works, including a world preview performance with a prelude performed by members of IUP Dance Theater.
Ben Munisteri Dance Projects was founded in 1994 in New York City. Composed of five dancers, the company has been under the direction of Ben Munisteri for eighteen years, presenting a body of dance repertoire that challenges the perception of contemporary dance making. Munisteri, who sees himself as an editor, tailor, and craftsman in dance, has led the company to perform in a wide variety of dance theaters and campuses across the globe.
The company has enjoyed home seasons presented by the Joyce Theater, Central Park SummerStage, Dance Theater Workshop, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, among others.
The troupe will perform three pieces from its current repertoire, including a world preview performance of its newest work, Robot vs. Mermaid. This new work will include a prelude performed by a specially auditioned corps of students from the IUP Dance Theater.
Beginning the evening will be Catalog, first performed at the Damrosch Theater at New York’s Lincoln Center in August 2010. This piece was originally choreographed to three songs by the English rock band Radiohead.
In response to the Lincoln Center performance, Alastair Maccauley of the New York Times commented, “The dancers were as accomplished as the choreography, with strong footwork, firm jumps and turns, and remarkable coordination.”
Binary, the second work, was originally made possible by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and a residency with Alverna Presents in Milwaukee. It was further developed at the Williams Center at Lafayette College in Easton, Pa.
Tickets for the Ben Munisteri Dance Projects performance are available now at the Hadley Union Building ticket office on the IUP campus, by calling the ticket office at 724-357-1313, or online. Remaining tickets may be purchased at the door beginning forty-five minutes before the start of the performance.
Tickets are $16 for regular admission, $14 for seniors (age sixty-two and older), and $10 for students and children. For more information, call the Lively Arts at 724-357-2547 or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org.
Zink Hall Dance Theater is located along Maple Street on the IUP campus near the corner of Maple and Eleventh streets and adjacent to Memorial Field House and Miller Stadium.
In addition to the performance, Munisteri and the IUP dancers will present a special workshop at the Palace Theater in Greensburg at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 3. Cost for the workship is $5. Munisteri will also conduct a workshop for high school students from Indiana Area Senior High School and Purchase Line High School.
Performance Plus is presented by the Lively Arts at IUP, a program of the College of Fine Arts. The series is funded, in part, by the IUP Student Cooperative Association, African American Cultural Center, Office of International Education, and Liberal Studies. This project is also funded by an additional grant from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and funding by the PCA Partners in the Arts program provided through and managed by the Pennsylvania Rural Arts Alliance.
