The Department of Music will present the eleventh annual IUP Jazz Festival on April 2–3, 2011.
As part of the festival, a concert on Saturday, April 2, will feature guest soloist Marvin Stamm on trumpet. He will perform with the IUP Jazz Band, under the direction of Keith Young, and the IUP Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Kevin Eisensmith. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. in Fisher Auditorium of IUP’s Performing Arts Center.
Also part of the festival, a free concert will be presented April 3 at 2:00 p.m. featuring the Indiana Junior High School Jazz Band and the IUP Wind Ensemble, with guest soloists Stamm and Eisensmith. Find more information about the April 3 jazz concert.
Throughout his distinguished career, Stamm has been praised for both the art and the craft of trumpet playing. A graduate of North Texas State University, he has performed with and been a member of the Stan Kenton orchestra, the Woody Herman band, the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra, and the Duke Pearson Big Band as well as performing with Frank Sinatra and the Benny Goodman Sextet, among others.
More recently, Stamm has focused his attention on his first love: playing jazz. Over his career, he has been a member of John Lewis’ American Jazz Orchestra, the Bob Mintzer Band, the George Gruntz Concert Jazz Band, and Louis Bellson’s big band and quintet and, on a number of occasions, performed with the big band of composer Maria Schneider.
Currently, Stamm spends much of the year touring. His activities include performing as a soloist, touring with his jazz quartet, and playing in a duo with pianist Bill Mays. Stamm and Mays recently formed and are touring with a new group, the Inventions Trio, which includes cellist Alisa Horn. Stamm performs with symphony orchestras throughout the country and maintains his ties with the George Gruntz Concert Jazz Band.
Consciously acknowledging his debt to the influence and guidance of former teachers and fellow musicians, Stamm also commits a good deal of his time to helping young music students develop their own voices.
Tickets are available in advance at the Hadley Union Building and will be sold at the door starting one hour before the performance. Tickets are $9 for regular admission, $8 for senior citizens, and $6 for students and children.
