IUP Marching Band, an ensemble of the
Department of Music and under the direction of David Martynuik, will perform on Sunday, November 7, 2010, at 7:00 p.m. The concert marks the return of the always-popular Band in Review, part of the
Sound Choices series this year. It will be presented in Fisher Auditorium of IUP’s Performing Arts Center.
Martynuik, joining the IUP music faculty in 2001, explained, “This will be the first time that the Marching Band has performed in Fisher Auditorium since before the extensive renovations to the Performing Arts Center in 2007.
“We will perform music from over the course of the entire Fall season, including Gustav Holst’s classic masterpiece “The Planets,” Martynuik said. “We will also perform music that was made famous by Eric Clapton.”
The IUP Marching Band was formed in 1921 under the leadership of D.O. Slyker, who was followed by a succession of directors that continued to build on a tradition of musical excellence and precision. Disbanded for two years during World War II, the band, often referred to as “The Legend,” has always been considered synonymous with exuberance, excellence, and extraordinary imagination.
Over the years, the Marching Band has been featured at a host of band festivals, parades, and special events throughout the region. They have performed on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, at the Statue of Liberty, and in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York. In 1987, the IUP Marching Band was the official band at the U.S. Constitution bicentennial celebration, and represented the U.S. in 1989 in Paris during the French Bicentennial.
The Marching Band is also a popular group performing for many major professional sports teams, having performed for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Buffalo Bills, Washington Redskins, Philadelphia Eagles, New York Giants, and the CFL’s Montreal Alouettes.
The IUP Marching Band continues to be a great source of pride for the university and the Indiana community, and is in high demand for special appearances around Pennsylvania and neighboring states.
