The Department of Music will present the Percussion Chamber Ensemble, known as Intensity, in its first concert of the season on Tuesday, September 28, 2010. The concert will be held in Gorell Recital Hall, located on the second floor of Sutton Hall, at 8:00 p.m. The concert is free and under the direction of Michael Kingan.
In an effort to showcase upperclassmen and graduate students, a new percussion ensemble experience called Intensity was initiated in Spring 2005. An extension of the IUP Percussion Ensemble, this chamber group explores contemporary chamber music literature centered on percussion, occasionally incorporating other instruments. Repertoire is performed on a separate evening from the full IUP Percussion Ensemble Concert since smaller groups of musicians with sometimes large setups are involved, making it less practical to program during the same event.
Intensity is considered to be a premiere group performing interesting and challenging percussion chamber music at a high artistic level.
This concert features the music of Pulitzer Prize-winning composer George Crumb, as well as works by Mark Ford, Brett Dietz, and Russell Peck. Two original compositions by IUP Percussion alumni Vince Wallace and Dana Difilippantonio will be premiered. The concert features guest mezzo-soprano Jane Potter Baumer.
