Hundreds of students from Indiana University of Pennsylvania will be providing service to Indiana organizations and agencies through the fall Into the Streets event on Sept. 20.
Into the Streets is sponsored and organized by the IUP Office of Student Leadership in the Division of Student Affairs. Individual students and student teams and organizations will be participating in the program.
Students will be working at locations and organizations including:
- Friends of Whites Woods, 10 a.m. to noon, removing invasive barberry plants and planting native tree seedlings in White’s Woods.
- Indiana Community Garden, 10 a.m. to noon, weeding and mulching around edible fruit trees and cherubs in the Indiana Community Garden food forest.
- Indiana County Humane Society Cause for Paws event at Blue Spruce Park from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
- Indiana Free Library, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Students will be collecting donations for the bag of books sale and will be passing out coupons on Philadelphia Street with information about the Little Read Bookstore.
- Indiana Theater, 10 a.m.to 3 p.m., painting and updating several spaces in the theater, including the reception room off the main theater space, the concession area, the green room, performance space, and offices on the fourth floor of the theater building.
- The Salvation Army, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., setting up for the Coats for Kids program and preparing the space for the upcoming Red Kettle fundraising program
- Whole Unity Inc., noon to 3 p.m. preparing the space for upcoming programming.
Students will also provide service to the Indiana County Department of Veterans Affairs on Sept. 19 from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m., organizing supplies for the upcoming Veterans’ Expo and Stand Down event.
“Community service can be a transformative experience that helps students develop a deeper understanding of themselves, their values, and their sense of purpose, ultimately preparing them to become ethical and impactful leaders in their communities and beyond,” IUP Director of Student Leadership Donovan Daniel said.
