What’s a book you would recommend to someone who wanted to learn more about your area of expertise?

Mathematics for Human Flourishing by Francis Su. The book is written by a mathematician and former president of the Mathematical Association of America. It seeks to present mathematics and the study of mathematics by anyone as a means for human beings to flourish and meet basic human needs such as play, beauty, freedom, justice, and love. It is also an invitation to anyone who may have had a negative experience with the subject in the past to re-examine both the subject and their ability to study mathematics.

Francisco Alarcón, a native of Guatemala, joined the IUP faculty in 1992. His main areas of research have been the study of commutative semirings, the use of technology in teaching mathematics, and equity and diversity at the college level.
