Indiana University of Pennsylvania’s Council of Trustees approved three naming resolutions on Thursday, May 4, 2023.

Kopchick Hall Geoscience Lab in Honor, Memory of Former Geoscience Professor
The laboratory will honor the late Walt Granata, one of the founding members of the Department of Geoscience. The department was founded in 1968; Granata was chair of the department from 1972 to 1977 and continued leading field trips with students until his retirement in 1981. Granata passed away in 2013.

Rooms in the Kovalchick Complex in Honor of Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity
The naming resolution recognized Phi Sigma Kappa as a longtime leader in IUP’s Greek (fraternity and sorority) community, including Phi Sigma Kappa’s financial contributions to the construction of the Kovalchick Complex.

Tennis Court in Honor of Donors
Trustees approved the naming of the James D. and Poom Sunhachawi-Tayor Tennis Court in honor of the couple’s long-time support of the IUP tennis program. James Taylor is a 1986 safety sciences graduate; Poom Sunhachawi-Taylor is a 1987 political science graduate. Taylor was a three-year letterman on the men’s tennis team and was a finalist in number three doubles at the PSAC tournament; the couple met on the IUP tennis courts.
