IUP marked the establishment of a memorial scholarship in honor of Stephen J. Mayhle, a 2002 Criminology graduate and Pittsburgh police officer, April 6, 2011, at KPMG in Pittsburgh.
Mayhle, an Indiana native, was one of three Pittsburgh officers killed while responding to a disturbance April 4, 2009. He was twenty-nine at the time of his death.
The scholarship fund was established by KPMG, an international audit, tax, and advisory firm, with the assistance of KPMG employee Julie Duvall, a school friend of Mayhle, and Mayhle's widow, Shandra.
The first scholarship will be given in 2012. Preference will be given to a student who has an immediate family member who died in the line of duty as a police officer.
If no students meet those criteria, applicants will be considered if they are enrolled full time, have a declared major in the Department of Criminology, maintain a grade-point average of at least 3.0, and demonstrate good moral character.
Applicants must submit an essay with a maximum of three hundred words explaining their interest in pursuing a career in criminology.
