Dr. Rosemary Gido, Criminology professor and internship coordinator, has been awarded the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences Mentorship Award for her work in guiding and assisting students.
Gido was recognized with the award at the February 26, 2010, Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences awards ceremony in San Diego.
In the past five years, Gido has mentored eighty-two doctoral students in paper presentations at fourteen national and local conference venues.
Gido has been teaching at IUP since 1997. She earned her bachelor's degree in sociology from College Misericordia, graduating magna cum laude, and her master's degree and doctorate from the State University of New York, Albany. Her dissertation was titled “The Stability of Punishment Hypothesis: An Analysis of New York State Jail.”
Gido has lectured and taught at institutions including Penn State University, the Garda College of Ireland, the Russell Sage College, the College of St. Rose, and Schenectady County Community College.
Throughout her career, she has done extensive research on issues in the field of criminology and has completed numerous funded research projects through the university. She was most recently the principal investigator for the evaluation of the Daily Living Skills Therapeutic Program at SCI (State Correctional Institute) Muncy for the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections.
Gido has written eight books and serves as editor of the Prison Journal. Her articles have been published in the Prison Journal, Criminal Justice Policy Research, the Justice Professional, Journal of Criminal Justice Education, and the American Journal of Criminal Justice. Gido has also presented her research at criminal justice institutions around the United States.
Gido is a board member of the Pennsylvania Prison Society and member of the Pennsylvania Legislative Task Force on Incarcerated Parents. She has been the internship coordinator for the Criminology Department since 2002 and is chair of the university's Policy Examination Committee.
Other honors and awards Gido has received include the Excellence Award from the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences, Minority and Women's Section; the First Annual Award from the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences, Corrections Section; the Dean's Award and a research grant from the College of Health and Human Services; and the Coramae Ritchey Mann Leadership Award from the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences, Minority and Women's Section.
