In honor of Black History Month, the African American Cultural Center will coordinate a collection Monday, February 1, 2010, to benefit the Eastern Orthodox Foundation.
Household items, office supplies, and monetary donations will be accepted from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the African American Cultural Center, Susan Snell Delaney Hall, 920 Grant Street, Room B23. Donations from the university and area community will be welcomed.
The Eastern Orthodox Foundation is a transitional living center, often serving people who are homeless and in need of food, shelter, clothing, and other services.
Black History Month events continue with the film Banished on Tuesday, February 2, at 7:00 p.m. in the Hadley Union Building Ohio Room. The film is the story of three communities who expelled African Americans from their homes a hundred years ago and the reaction of returning descendants to these communities.
“Question America: The Legacy of Mrs. Fannie Lou Hamer” will be presented Monday, February 8, at 6:00 p.m. in the Hadley Union Building Ohio Room as part of the university's Six O'Clock Series.
Hamer was an American voting rights activist who helped create the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party.
Both the film and the Hamer presentation are free and open to the community.
