“The Board of Directors of the IUP Research Institute is pleased to welcome Dr. Myers to Indiana,” IUP Research Institute Board of Directors Chairman Dr. John Johnson said.

“Dr. Myers is a nationally recognized figure in university research management. He is much sought after as a consultant to universities and independent sponsored research corporations for his practical advice and knowledge relating to federal OMB [Office of Management and Budget] compliance monitoring. He is at the top of his field. As a board of directors, we believe Dr. Myers' previous experiences and demonstrated skills will contribute significantly to the advancement of the IUP research agenda.”

“The university is very pleased at the selection of Dr. Phillip Myers for this important position,” Dr. Tony Atwater, IUP president, said. “Dr. Myers possesses an impressive record of promoting faculty scholarship and sponsored research. The university administration looks forward to working with him in supporting the research needs and interests of the IUP faculty.”

In his current position, Myers is responsible for establishing universitywide policies and procedures for research and grants administration compliance with university, state, and federal regulations. He also manages the sponsored programs office staff to increase the level of funding for basic and applied research by encouraging and assisting in the development of grant proposals and contracts.

In his role, Myers directed the increase of grant proposals from $16 million in fiscal year 1995 to nearly $70 million in fiscal years 2003 and 2004.

“I am happy about the opportunity to join IUP and to work with the Research Institute, Academic Affairs, and the graduate school to further develop the research base and to create partnerships with faculty, staff, and students across the campus. I look forward to meeting the faculty of IUP and helping with research and professional development,” Myers said.

Before his current work, Myers was associate dean of the College of Graduate Studies at Mankato State University, now Minnesota State University, Mankato, and interim graduate dean, College of Graduate Studies. He also worked as professor of history at the university.

He has worked as an assistant professor of history at Bellevue College, Bellevue, Neb., and as an instructor of history at the University of Iowa and at Ottumwa Heights College, now Indian Hills Community College.

He is a retired member of the Army National Guard, achieving the rank of lieutenant colonel.

He is the author of Caution and Cooperation: The American Civil War in British-American Relations, published by Kent State University Press in 2008, and has also published several articles on research institutes and administration.

He has been an invited presenter at many professional conferences and meetings. He is also a member of several professional organizations, including the National Council of University Research Administrators and the Society of Research Administrators International, serving as its journal editor.

Myers has a Ph.D. in history from the University of Iowa and master's and bachelor's degrees in history from the University of Colorado.
