The IUP Economics Club wishes to thank the alumni who met with students during the spring 2026 semester. Students learned valuable insights about career pathways, tips for greater academic success, and networking suggestions.

Walking backward through the semester, spring 2026 Economics Club activity highlights include the following:

  • April 16: Elam Gates ’19 is a finance associate senior at PNC, where he currently works on the Corporate & Institutional Bank Finance Control Team. The C&IB Finance Control Team provides financial reporting for consolidated C&IB to inform management of current trends in the business and to aid in the decision-making process. Gates graduated from IUP as part of the Business Honors Cohort with a bachelor’s degree in finance and a minor in economics. During his time at IUP, he was actively involved in a multitude of student-led organizations, including president of the Phi Gamma Nu business fraternity, COO and sector analyst for the Student Managed Investment Portfolio, and member of the Student Finance Association. Before starting his career with PNC, he was a financial representative intern with Northwestern Mutual. Gates interned with PNC with the Finance and Accounting program in 2018 and joined full-time the following year. This event was cohosted with the Student Managed Investment Portfolio and the Student Finance Association.

  • March 19: Robert Schwartz ‘18 is an associate portfolio manager in the fixed income group at Federated Hermes, where he supports portfolio construction and risk management across $5 billion in assets. His experience spans the public credit markets, including treasuries and agencies, mortgage-backed securities, investment-grade and high-yield corporates, and international and emerging market debt. Prior to public credit, Schwartz worked in private wealth management at First Commonwealth Bank and in corporate finance at PNC. Outside of his institutional role, Schwartz is an angel investor and enjoys working with entrepreneurs across robotics, software, artificial intelligence, MedTech, FinTech, cybersecurity, and real estate. He serves on the board of 99 Tartans Alumni Angels, a 501(c)(3). Schwartz earned his bachelor’s degree in finance with a minor in economics, and he was actively involved with SMIP. He later completed an MBA from Carnegie Mellon University. This event was cohosted with SMIP and SFA.

  • March 3: Caleb King ’19 is an energy and commodity senior consultant at capSpire. He provides advisory services for the energy and commodity industries with a specialty in technology solutions and business operations. King graduated from IUP summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in applied mathematics and an economics double major. He subsequently earned his master of energy economics degree from Rice University in 2023. While attending IUP, Caleb was a member of the Cook Honors College, served as the IUP student trustee, and was active with IUP Ambassadors. He began his career as an intern at PNC Bank in risk management, and he was then hired as an independent risk management associate. King advanced at PNC to working as a model risk associate before moving to Houston to pursue his master’s degree.

  • February 12: “Loving Economics” Spring Semester Welcome Back Heart-Shaped Pizza Party!

The mission of the Economics Club is to promote the interest and understanding of economics among students, to provide opportunities for students to participate in projects benefiting the university community while increasing their own knowledge of economics, and to bring students and faculty members together in an informal social environment. Membership in this organization is open to all members of the IUP community. Jim Jozefowicz currently serves as faculty advisor for the club.
