On March 27, Yaya Sissoko hosted economics and finance alumnus Caleb Moore ’07, M’18 in his Monetary Economics course. Moore talked about banking credit management during financial crises such as the 2008 Great Recession, the 2020 Pandemic Recession, and the more recent economic conditions.
Moore is a seasoned finance professional with a diverse background, spanning over 18 years in the banking industry. His career trajectory includes roles in derivatives, credit, and risk management. Notably, he has spearheaded the creation of multiple departments within several financial institutions, showcasing his entrepreneurial spirit and strategic vision. Moore currently serves as the chief credit officer at Virginia National Bank, Virginia. Prior to his finance career, he spent seven years in market research, providing a unique perspective to his work. Beyond his professional achievements, Moore is deeply committed to community service and actively participates on numerous nonprofit boards.
After interacting with Moore in class, Emily Schumacher (BA, Economics/Honors) said, “It was a pleasure having Caleb Moore speak to our Monetary Economics class. He was an inspiring, kind, and down-to-earth alumnus who was very transparent about his non-linear professional journey. I particularly appreciated his use of real-world analogies, how he emphasized the importance of making mistakes, and not needing to have or know all the answers right now; it’s about bouncing back, working harder to find the answer while maintaining your integrity and strong work ethic, and remaining adaptable to change.”

On April 6 and 8, Jim Jozefowicz hosted IUP economics alumna Angel Alcantara ’23, M‘25 in his Advanced Econometrics course. An instructor in the IUP Department of School Psychology, Special Education, and Sociology, Alcantara taught the students Tableau, a data visualization tool, using tutorials published in the Journal of Economic Education (Batt et al., 2020). After guiding the students through several applications of Tableau, Alcantara provided the students with an opportunity to experiment in Tableau using World Indicators data.
Having gained greater exposure to Tableau, Paige Clawson (BA, Economics/Honors and Accounting double majors) said, “This past week, I had the opportunity to learn how to utilize Tableau. Since this platform was completely new to me, I was unsure what to expect, but was blown away by the endless capabilities the software has. Angel demonstrated how to create unique visuals that are key when relaying information from complex data sets or results. I learned how to create bar charts, maps, tree maps, and many other useful tools, and I am very thankful for this amazing opportunity that provided me with a unique new skillset that I can apply to my own research and on my résumé.”
