As the winter weather continues, IUP Emergency Management encourages the campus community to use caution, slow down, and remain alert, especially during snow squalls, freezing rain, or periods of low visibility.
If travel is necessary, PennDOT recommends motorists:
-
Monitor weather forecasts and roadway conditions
-
Use headlights at all times
-
Reduce speeds and increase following distance
-
Avoid using cruise control on wet, snow-covered, or icy roads
-
Clear all snow and ice from vehicles before driving
-
Always wear seatbelts
Drivers should use extreme caution around snowplows by staying well back and never traveling beside them.
Additional Safety Reminders

Allow extra time for travel and use caution on sidewalks and roadways.
-
Wear appropriate footwear with good tread or slip-resistant soles.
-
Take short, slow steps on snow- or ice-covered surfaces; avoid using your cellphone while walking.

Take extra care when entering or exiting your vehicle, as areas in and around parking spots could be slippery.
-
Dress in warm layers, including hats, gloves, and insulated footwear.
-
Limit time spent outdoors when possible and cover exposed skin to prevent frostbite.
-
Be alert for signs of cold-related illness, such as numbness, shivering, or confusion, and seek medical attention if symptoms occur.
