Cadets from IUP’s Police Academy proudly participated in the Semper Gratus 5K (Shamrock Shuffle) Nineteen cadets from IUP’s Police Academy proudly participated in the Semper Gratus 5K (Shamrock Shuffle) on March 21, joining community members in a meaningful effort to raise funds for a local family whose daughter has been diagnosed with Dravet Syndrome, a rare and severe form of epilepsy.

The cadets’ involvement reflects the Academy’s strong commitment to service beyond the classroom. By taking part in this event, they are not only demonstrating physical readiness and teamwork but also compassion and dedication to supporting those in need within the community.

Cadets running in the Semper Gratus 5K“This is what being part of the law enforcement profession is truly about—showing up for others,” director of the IUP Police Academy Marcia Cole said. “I am incredibly proud of our cadets for stepping forward to support this family. Their willingness to give their time and energy to such an important cause speaks volumes about their character.”

The Semper Gratus charity, which means “Always Grateful,” uses the premise of a small town with a loud voice—when a small town comes together, great things can happen.

This is the tenth year that the IUP Police cadets have been involved in this event.

This year, the organization’s 5K brought awareness to Dravet Syndrome while providing financial assistance to help the family manage ongoing medical care and related challenges.

The IUP Police Academy, located in IUP’s Robertshaw building, celebrated its fiftieth anniversary in September 2025. During the past 50 years, the IUP Police Academy has trained more than 5,000 cadets.
