D2L Upgrade: Saturday, May 9

The biannual Desire2Learn (D2L) upgrade is scheduled to occur on Saturday, May 9, 2015, from 12:01 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Eastern Time. During the upgrade period, D2L will not be available.

D2L upgrades are scheduled to occur on the Saturdays of fall and spring Commencement. The D2L maintenance and upgrade schedule has been established in coordination with the Pennsylvania State System and the 13 other state-owned universities.

Montgomery to Present on IUP’s Data Warehousing History at 2015 HEDW Annual Conference

IT Services Coordinator Jeff Montgomery has been selected to present at the 2015 Higher Education Data Warehouse (HEDW) annual conference. It is the first time IUP has been selected to present at this event.

Montgomery will present on “Creating a Business Intelligence Program at a public university and sharing the intellectual property with another State System university.”

The presentation will highlight IUP’s 10-year data warehousing history as well as ongoing efforts to share custom-built solutions with Edinboro University begun in 2012.

Unscheduled Maintenance Window for Some Network File Sharing Resources

Due to required emergency hardware maintenance some network file sharing resources will be unavailable between 4:30 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. on Friday, March 27.

Check your JunkMail Folder!

It appears that some e-mail messages were inadvertently delivered to JunkMail folders this morning between 6:15 a.m. and 9:45 a.m.

Please take a few moments to review your JunkMail folder, if you have one. There may be legitimate messages that you need to move from JunkMail to your Inbox.

Office 365 for Staff and Faculty

IUP staff and faculty are no longer required to visit the IT Support Center and fill out paperwork to receive a copy of Microsoft Office. You can now visit the IT Support Center software page to receive your free copy (Office 365 instructions).

Highlights of Office 365 vs Traditional Media:

  • Licensed usage for up to five devices at any given time. This includes phones, tablets, OS X, and Windows operating systems.
  • Licensing tied to your account, not to a physical device.
  • Digital distribution for devices without DVD drives.
  • Always up to date with the latest updates from Microsoft.

Common Scams

As the semester continues, please make certain to be on the lookout for fraudulent e-mail messages. Following are examples of some of the messages that have reportedly been sent to IUP students, faculty, and staff:

Job Scams

These fraudulent messages will offer internship, jobs, or business opportunities and will result in the victim receiving a fraudulent check to be deposited.

IRS Scams

These phishing messages will ask for personal or financial information claiming it is needed for tax purposes. These are not legitimate, and you should not respond to them.

Tech Support Scams

These fake messages will claim that you need to take some action in order to keep your account active. The IT Support Center will never send a message like this.

Make certain you never click any links in a suspicious message, and never send personal information via e-mail to anyone.

2015 PASSHE Virtual Conference: Come Interface with Your Colleagues

The PASSHE Virtual Conference takes place weekdays, February 9-20, 2015. The conference features 60 one-hour synchronous sessions on topics highlighting the innovative and current hot-button issues in using technology in the classroom and in delivering distance education. Sessions will appeal to a variety of interests and skill levels.
