An exhibit titled “The Far Side of Function: Contemporary Works in Wood” will be presented in Kipp Gallery from February 2 to March 5, 2010. A public opening reception will be held Tuesday, February 2, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the gallery, which is located in Sprowls Hall on the IUP campus.
The exhibition, presented by the Department of Art, showcases some of the most important names in contemporary furniture design and wood sculpture throughout North America. The exhibition was curated by IUP art alumnus Michael Stadler and was originally shown at the Dairy Barn Art Center in Athens, Ohio. There will also be several pieces from this show exhibited both on the Grand Balcony and directly in front of the IUP Performing Arts Center.
When asked about curating the exhibit, Stadler said, “The selection of these artists is based on their involvement with the contemporary wood art movement. Many of the participants are renowned furniture makers, educators, and demonstrators.”
He added, “A range of emerging artists and collaborators representing the directions and future of wood art are also included in the exhibit. All of the artists represent the freshest approach and farthest stretch of imaginative ideas in the fields of woodworking and contemporary sculpture.”
Exhibit hours are Tuesdays through Fridays from noon until 4:00 p.m.
