For the second year, Indiana University of Pennsylvania has been selected as a host institution through the Proyecta 100,000 Program.

Proyecta Students Visiting IUP Fall 2017IUP will host a cohort of 44 undergraduate students from Mexico, all who have received a full scholarship from the Mexican government to attend IUP from November 12 through December 4 for an immersive cultural learning experience. IUP welcomed nine Proyecta 100,000 Program students in fall 2017.

Participants will attend intensive English classes at the American Language Institute, participate in campus activities, and visit local areas of interest. In addition to capacity development through the program, participants are encouraged to share their culture and build relationships with members of the IUP community to lay the groundwork for future collaboration.

“We are excited to welcome a second group of Proyecta scholarship students to our campus community,” said Michele Petrucci, IUP associate vice president for International Education and Global Engagement and executive director of the American Language Institute.

“We know IUP is well-positioned to provide them with an enriching and immersive cultural experience. Bringing Mexican students to western Pennsylvania is an honor and an exciting opportunity for the IUP and Indiana communities to learn more, first-hand, about Mexican culture, history, and politics,” she said.

The 2017 cohort of Proyecta 100,000 students found their experience at IUP culturally and academically enriching, with several commenting that the warm welcome of the university community made them feel at home, Petrucci said. The students were excellent ambassadors, sharing their culture and building relationships through active participation in ALI classes, campus programming, and Office of International Education events.

Proyecta 100,000 is an initiative of the Mexican government promoting the vision of a multinational region of knowledge by encouraging opportunities for student mobility, innovation, development, and mutual understanding between the United States and Mexico. Proyecta 100,000 is a complimentary initiative to the US program, 100,000 Strong in the Americas.

In fall 2018, IUP welcomed more than 800 international students from more than 50 different countries. IUP’s Office of International Education offers a number of outreach activities to the IUP campus and the Indiana community throughout the year.
