Dance Theater Brings Exotic Paintings to Life Through Whimsical Performance

Dancers in “Henri Rousseau: Tales of the Tropics”Indiana University of Pennsylvania Dance Theater will present “Henri Rousseau: Tales of the Tropics. From Carnival Evening to the Flamingos to Exotic Landscape.” The stories told through the famed paintings of renowned Henri Rousseau are brought to life through innovative choreography and images. The paintings and their performances are whimsical, fun, and inviting to an audience of all ages. “Henri Rousseau: Tales of the Tropics” will be performed November 2–3 at 7:00 p.m. and November 4 at 2:00 p.m. in the Zink Hall Dance Theater.

“Henri Rousseau: Tales of the Tropics” is directed by Holly Boda-Sutton, featuring beautiful original music scores composed by David Martynuik. The talented guest musicians include Heather Killmeyer (oboe), associate professor of Double Reeds at East Tennessee State University; Christopher Elchico (soprano saxophone), member of the Barkada Quartet; Rosemary Engelstad (clarinet), assistant professor of Clarinet at IUP; Justin Polyblank (saxophone), member of the United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own”; and André Januário (bassoon), former assistant principal bassoon of the Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro Symphony Orchestra.

Guest choreographers include Joan Van-Dyke, associate professor of Dance at IUP; Lindsey Grove, IUP Dance Theater alumna; Anna Ponak-Shively, IUP Dance Theater alumna; and Elaine Seckar, IUP Dance Theater alumna, who is currently training in the Dynamic Embodiment Somatic Movement Therapy and Educator program under Martha Eddy.

Nancy Pipkin-Hutchinson serves as costume designer along with Ethan Hollinger as lighting designer and Brian Jones as set design. 

Dancers in “Henri Rousseau: Tales of the Tropics”Tickets for this event are available for purchase online through the Lively Arts website or by calling the ticket hotline at 724-357-1313. They can also be purchased at the Performing Arts Center Ticket Office in Fisher Auditorium. Any seats remaining will be sold at the door starting one hour prior to the performance. Tickets are priced at $15 for regular admission, $12 for seniors and groups, and $10 for students and children. Online tickets are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The ticket hotline and ticket office in Fisher Auditorium are open from noon to 5:00 p.m. weekdays. The ticket office is closed for university holidays. Tickets are not available at the Hadley Union Building.
