On November 20, 2017, 13 student leaders
from the Student Managed Investment Portfolio traveled New York City to explore
the financial capital of the world and meet with IUP alumni and bankers from
top-tier investment firms.
First on their list was VanEck, an investment management
company which offers custom products that take advantage of targeted market
opportunities. IUP alumnus Mark Hurrell, director of Institutional Business
Development, hosted the students for an interactive discussion. Mark and his
team delivered robust presentations on both hard-asset and cryptocurrency
strategies which the students had high interest in.

That same day, SMIP members enjoyed a skyline view of NYC as
they made their way to the top of the One World Observatory. This elegant view
was followed up with an even more enlightening perspective on the city,
provided through an interactive Wall Street tour.

Students also had the opportunity to meet with additional
industry professionals. Jim Leda, alumnus and managing director of KRyS Global,
spoke with students about corporate recovery and Chapter 11 bankruptcy
negotiation. Jim has always been a strong advocate for giving back to the
university and is constantly offering students networking opportunities and

A little more uptown, analysts Kieran Kenny and Ashna Muhki
took time to showcase their roles at Morgan Stanley Wealth Management and
discuss investment strategies with SMIP members. Students spent almost two
hours at Morgan Stanley talking shop and discussing current market trends. Chief
SMIP officers delivered insight into current SMIP holdings, and long-term
management strategies as Kieran and Ashna discussed their thoughts on the
portfolio and industry outlooks.
The trip concluded in a more informal setting, as students
held casual conversation with Blake
Gwinn, vice president of Rates Strategy at RBS. Blake had great exposure to broader macroeconomic forces within US financial
markets, having previously worked at the NY FED and now at RBS. Blake offered
advice on macroeconomic forecasting, FED policy analysis, networking, and
career building. He even supplied macroeconomic overview booklets for students
to leverage in building out their own macro-updates for the Foundation for IUP.

SMIP members were extremely privileged to be offered such
support for this amazing trip. Thank you to all IUP alumni, industry
professionals, and the administration of the IUP Eberly College of Business and
Information Technology who made this experience possible. It is through real-world connections that
Eberly College students can grow into aspiring professionals.
