Dancers in "42nd Street"With everything that makes a musical a classic, 42nd Street comes directly from Broadway as the next big hit in the 2016–17 Ovations! lineup presented by the Lively Arts of IUP. This tale of fame and the American Dream will be presented Thursday, March 30, 2017, at 8:00 p.m. in Fisher Auditorium, located in IUP’s Performing Arts Center.

Based on the novel by Bradford Ropes and Busby Berkeley’s 1933 movie, this revitalized, updated version of the musical is touring the U.S., sparking inspiration and motivation nationwide.

Following the Broadway-bound Peggy Sawyer, the story features her rise as a star fueled by passion and brimming with song and dance. Focusing on the efforts of famed dictatorial “Great White Way,” the family show demonstrates the struggle and effort needed to mount a successful stage production and musical even at the height of the Great Depression.

Featuring some of the greatest songs ever written, the score includes the title song plus “Shuffle Off to Buffalo,” “We’re in the Money,” “Dames,” “Lullaby of Broadway,” “I Only Have Eyes for You,” and more. Directed by Mark Bramble and choreographed by Randy Skinner, the original 1980 Broadway production won the Tony Award for Best Musical and became an instant, long-running hit.

Tickets for 42nd Street are available either online or the Lively Arts’ online ticketing site. They can also be purchased at the Hadley Union Building ticket office on the IUP campus or by calling the HUB ticket office at 724-357-1313.

Any seats remaining will be sold at the door starting one hour prior to the performance. Tickets are priced at $44 for regular admission, $39 for seniors and groups, and $20 for students and children.
