Theater-by-the-Grove is invited once again to the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF), this time to perform last season’s Soldier’s Heart, written by Pittsburgh playwright Tammy Ryan and directed by April Daras.

The Department of Theater and Dance will send an ensemble of actors, technicians, and designers to the Region 2 festival at Westchester University for three performances of the play on January 14 as part of a five-day regional festival celebrating excellence in university theater across our eight-state region.

Students Katie Leonard, Chelsea Kikel, and Stephanie Clark were nominated for the Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship competition at the festival, and the production received a Certificate of Merit from KCACTF for “Cohesiveness in Design.”

Director April Daras, assistant professor of Theater at IUP, thought this play would resonate with the IUP and local communities because of IUP’s advocacy for student veterans and because of the universality of themes in the play. Said Daras, “‘Soldier’s Heart’ illuminates the destructive power of aggression to destabilize the healing properties of human connection. Following the play’s unrelenting descent into darkness, we resurface with an undeniable image of hope and resilience.”
