Beatrice Fennimore, Professional Studies in Education, published a chapter titled “A Social Justice Approach to Diverse Families” in the Handbook of Early Childhood Teacher Education (Couse & Recchia Eds. Routledge, 2016).

This handbook on early childhood teacher education is the first of its kind and provides a wide range of relevant information for early childhood teacher educators.

Fennimore’s chapter views all families inclusively as part of our national and global diversity without establishing “norms” as separate from “diversities.” Educators are urged to be compassionate advocates for families (viewed as those who are the main caregivers for the child and who are are most likely to be in constant communication with the school) as they focus on family resiliency, funds of knowledge, and funds of identity.
