The University Senate on September 9, 2014, approved the new BA in Musical Theater program, replacing the Department of Theater and Dance’s Interdisciplinary Fine Arts–Musical Theater Track. The new program integrates a more comprehensive degree and includes four new courses designed for the actor-singer-dancer.
The Musical Theater Track of the Interdisciplinary Fine Arts degree was first offered in 2007 because of the fine tradition of musical theater production and student demand for a combined degree. Since then, graduates have gone on to regional theaters, themed entertainment, and graduate schools to begin their careers in the performing arts. With a heightened profile and stronger curriculum, the Musical Theater program will stand out in the Ohio Valley region and will develop national recognition.
New courses in the degree program include Musical Theater Scene Study, Musical Theater Auditioning, Musical Theater History, and Musical Theater Performance.
The last, remaining hurdle to clear is approval by the State System Board of Governors. IUP is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theater, which will also be reviewing the new program for plan approval.
