David Lorenzi, associate professor in the Department of Health and Physical Education, was the recipient of the third annual Ray Coppler Award. The Ray Coppler Award is presented annually to a student, faculty, or staff member at IUP in recognition of exemplary contributions to disability education, awareness, and inclusiveness at IUP and in the community.
Lorenzi is in his 10th year at IUP, where he directs the Special Needs Activity Program (SNAP), a physical activity program for children and adults with disabilities. This program serves approximately 100 clients each semester and serves as a practicum experience for Health and Physical Education students and a volunteer opportunity for students across campus.
Lorenzi is active professionally in the field of adapted physical activity and education, serving as chair of both the Eastern District Association Adapted Physical Education Committee and chair of the American Association for Physical Activity and Recreation Adapted Aquatics Committee. He regularly teaches adapted aquatics instructor certification courses around the country and conducts teacher in-service trainings on adapted physical education.
