Theater-by-the Grove at Indiana University of Pennsylvania will present The Gentleman Dancing Master by William Wycherly as its 2011–2012 season finale. Performances are slated for April 19–21 and 25–28, 2012, at 8:00 p.m., with a matinee on Sunday, April 22, at 2:00 p.m. Performances will be presented on the Waller Hall Mainstage of the IUP Performing Arts Center.

The Gentleman Dancing Master is a light-hearted comedy of manners set in Restoration England. The plot revolves around the machinations of an overprotective father who, adopting a Spanish sense of gravity and discipline, attempts to keep his daughter from any romantic entanglements except one arranged by him. His choice for her future husband is her cousin, an outrageous French fop.

The daughter, Hippolita, who has vastly different ideas of an ideal mate, manages to outwit both father and fiancée in a serious of hilarious encounters and, in doing so, strikes an early blow for female freedom.

The play is filled with colorful costumes from the period and inventive set design and period music that will also entertain theater-goers.

Director and fight choreographer Michael Hood notes that the play is filled with social and political satire, physical humor, witty language, and, of course, swordplay. “This is the first time I have been able to introduce my actors to small sword technique, and I believe that audiences will enjoy both the precision and the comic nature of the fights very much.”

Tickets for The Gentleman Dancing Master are available in advance at the Hadley Union Building, located on Pratt Drive of the IUP campus. Seats remaining will be sold at the door starting 45 minutes before each performance. Tickets may also be purchased online at or by calling 724-357-1313.

Tickets are priced at $14 for regular admission, $12 for senior citizens and groups of fifteen or more, and $8 with a university I-Card.
