Students in Dr. Tim Nuttle’s Botany class (BIOL 210) got their hands dirty helping set up an experiment to study the effectiveness of different plant mixtures in performing green roof functions, like storm water retention and heat load reduction.
Students planted over 250 square feet of the green roof on Weyandt Hall during class on Tuesday, October 11, 2011.
Students also measured effectiveness of plants of different functional types at retaining water in an experiment that was set up several months ago during the Spring semester.
Plants and specially engineered growth medium were donated by Eisler Landscapes, of Prospect, Pa. The modular growing trays were donated in part by Green Roof Outfitters (Charleston, S.C.).
