Daniel Perlongo’s “Only Apricots Fall in the Autumn Wind—Five Songs on Korean Zen Poems” for mezzo soprano and piano, was performed in the Music Inspired by Korean Zen Poetry lecture recital by Drs. Sarah Mantel and Susan Wheatley at the College Music Society (CMS) international conference in Seoul, South Korea, on July 4, 2011.
The Korean poet and scholar Dr. Won-Chung Kim, from Sungkyunkwan University in Seoul, who had translated the Zen poems into English, attended the recital and read each poem in Korean before its performance.
The conference continued in Gyeongju, South Korea, on July 8 at a CMS composers concert, where Perlongo’s related work, “Five Pieces on Korean Zen Poems” for piano four-hands, was premiered by Wheatley and Dr. Nanette Solomon of Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania.
