The IUP performance by Tony Award-winning actor Bernadette Peters, originally slated for September 15 as part of the Lively Arts’ new Ovations! series, has been rescheduled for Friday, May 4, 2012, now serving as the series’ finale event.
This change is to accommodate Peter’s appearance in Stephen Sondheim’s Follies, which, following a highly successful run at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., will move to Broadway in August.
When asked about this change, Hank Knerr, director of the Lively Arts, said “This is not unusual at all, especially when working with a legend such as Ms. Peters. Even though it involves changing our original plans, we are proud that a performer we have asked to come to IUP is in such demand.”
“The Broadway production will involve dozens of actors, musicians, designers, managers, and other support staff and play to thousands over its five-month run,” Knerr said. “The success of that centers squarely its leading cast member. Experiencing the incredible talents of Bernadette Peters will be well worth the wait.”
The IUP performance will be held in Fisher Auditorium and signals the finale to both the academic year and the new Ovations! series inaugural season. The Lively Arts is in the process of informing the many people who have already purchased subscriptions for the Peters event about the change.
The IUP appearance is funded by the Helwig Distinguished Artist Endowment, with additional contributions from the Helwig family.
Leading the Follies cast as Sally Durant Plummer, Peters received glowing reviews for her performance at the Kennedy Center. The New York Times’ Ben Brantley stated that her performance of the classic torch song “Losing My Mind” was “the most affecting version of this ballad I have ever heard.”
The New York production is set for Broadway’s Marquis Theater and will include a cast of forty-one actors and a live orchestra of twenty-eight musicians. It is planned to run through January 2012 with eight performances a week, six days a week. Previews will begin on August 7, 2011, with its official opening set for September 12.
An additional date change for the Ovations! season will be moving the musical theater performance of Young Frankenstein by one day from April 17 to April 16, 2012. This is to assist the Broadway tour’s extensive engagement schedule.
