The IUP softball team has been selected to host one of the two regional pods in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional tournament.
With a record of 33-6, the PSAC champion Crimson Hawks are the top seed in the eight-team tournament. They will take on eighth-seeded Winston-Salem State (29-11) in the opening game Friday, May 13, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at Podbielski Field.
Winner of the pod will be determined during the championship game Sunday, May 15, at noon.
Survivors of the two regional pods will play in the NCAA Super Regionals, May 20 and 21, at a site to be determined. As the tournament’s top seed, IUP would host the Super Regional, should it make it through this weekend’s play.
Winners of the eight Super Regionals advance to the College World Series, May 26–30, in Salem, Va. IUP is seeking its first regional title and its first College World Series appearance in school history.
The Crimson Hawks, ranked eleventh in the nation by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association, are in the NCAA tournament for the second straight season and the eighth time overall.
