Students Present Research, Receive Awards at Joint Meeting of Geographer Groups

IUP Geography and Regional Planning students Sara Fortnam, Eric McClure, Patrick McKinney, Rosamaria Ponciano, and Jason Wade presented research at the joint meeting of the Pennsylvania Geographical Society and the Mid Atlantic Division of the Association of American Geographers, held in York, Pa., on November 4-5, 2010.

Master’s student Eric McClure won first place in the student poster contest with his entry, “The Downtown Destinations Project, Westmoreland County, PA,” and fellow graduate student Patrick McKinney took second place with his poster, “Leveraging National Service Programs to Map Recreation Resources.”

In the paper competitions, undergraduate Geography/Regional Planning double major Rosamaria Ponciano earned second place for her presentation, “A Geography/Planning Internship in Guatemala: Bring a Sense of Community to the Village of San Felipe,” and graduate student Sara Fortnam earned a second place award for her research, “The Applicability of Geospatial Techniques to Analyze Visibility as a Determinant of Late-Woodland Settlement Patterns in Southwestern Pennsylvania.”
