The show will run April 26, 27, 28, 30, May 1, 2, and 3, 2019, at 7:30 p.m. on the Waller Hall main stage.

Performances will be presented as a co-production between Theater-by-the-Grove and Music Theater.

Pippin tells the story of a recent college graduate searching for his life’s purpose which, he believes, is the key to complete fulfillment. While at a crossroads, he makes a strange alliance with what appear to be group of travelers who take him on a magical journey to be extraordinary. But is his journey real… or only in his mind?

“When I first listened to this album at 15, it never left my turntable,” confesses director Rob Gretta.  He goes on to say, “A young man searching to find where he fits in the grand scheme deeply connected with me struggling to do the same.”

Though Pippin’s plot is fictional and presents very brief historical truths, the complicated relationship between Pepin and his father was intriguing to composer Stephen Schwartz while at Carnegie Mellon University in 1967. The musical, Schwartz wrote, “started as a sort of a medieval court intrigue musical melodrama. And then it gradually transmogrified into being semi-autobiographical. And then it turned into the story of my generation—as I saw it.”

Gretta admits, “Although our concept is very different from the original and most recent revival, I am certain the story will still resonate with audiences of any age.”
