Alexandra Brooks, a 2016 graduate of the Hospitality Management Department, returned to IUP September 25, 2018, to speak with students in Nicole Buse’s Human Resources in the Hospitality Industry courses and Yasong Wang’s Hospitality Cost Management courses.

Alexandra is a front office manager at the Ritz Carlton, Bachelor Gulch, which is located in Beaver Creek Colorado. She spent one-on-one time with students after her presentation, answering their questions about the industry and her career.

Alexandra also participated in the IUP Career Fair on September 26 to recruit students for internships and jobs at the Beaver Creek property. Alexandra shared her personal experiences navigating through the industry to the role she has now, detailing her benefits of working for a Ritz Carlton facility and provided advice to students wishing to follow in her path. She reflected with the students that only two years ago she was sitting in Professor Buse’s Human Resource Management course, and now she is recruiting students to join the exciting hospitality industry.

Here is a summary of the advice Alexandra left with students:

  • Obtain experience in the industry now while in college.
  • Understand transferable skills and how to market your skills to an employer.
  • Try out different jobs until you find the career for you.
  • Force yourself to step outside your comfort zone.
  • Strive to move up the organizational ladder. Make an intentional plan to reach that position.
  • Be open to taking risks.
  • Stay passionate in everything you do!
