David Downing, director of Graduate Studies in Literature and Criticism, recently read his paper, “The Politics of the Academic Mess,” as an invited presentation at the Humanities Center of the University of Pittsburgh.

Prior to the discussion period in this one-and-a-half-hour session, his lecture (and his recent scholarly work) was responded to by Kathleen Blee, dean of Graduate Studies and Research (also a well-known sociologist), and Lina Insana, professor and chair of the Department of French and Italian, both from the University of Pittsburgh.
