Citing the need to assist IUP students with military service
who are seeking employment, and to teach resumé reviewers how to translate armed
forces experience into "civilian work-world" terms on resumés, representatives
from the Veterans Leadership Program of Western Pennsylvania (VLP), the IUP
Career and Professional Development Center, and the IUP Military Resource Center
will be presenting a training session and resumé review fair on Thursday,
November 19, 2015, in the Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex.
IUP faculty and staff are invited to attend the resumé
review training from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m., conducted by Marine veteran Leah Kurz,
workforce development coordinator for the VLP. Kurz said she is looking forward
to meeting with IUP faculty, staff and student veterans.
“Once veterans apply
the techniques we teach,” Kurz said, “the flood gates open and the majority of
veterans are able to not just find a job, but rather a career position that
involves their natural passions and talents.”
Following the training, faculty, staff and student veterans
are invited to attend a luncheon from 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., featuring IUP
student and Army veteran Khrysta Brown as the guest speaker. Brown was deployed
to Bagram, Afghanistan, where she was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. Brown
is a human resources specialist at Peoples Natural Gas, and will graduate from
IUP next month with a degree in Human Resource Management, while continuing to
serve as an Army Reservist.
At 1:00 p.m., a resumé review fair will be held for student
veterans. Please contact the IUP Career and Professional Development Center at
724-357-2235 or email email@example.com
to confirm attendance.
Kurz said that being not only a veteran but also a student
at IUP can be a very exciting time in a student's life. “I am so honored to
have the opportunity to share the inside knowledge I know about landing the
perfect job,” she said.
