Hunger Awareness Week at IUP, sponsored by the Department of Sociology and the Department of Food and Nutrition, will be April 25 through May 2, 2015.

Kicking off the week is a food drive to benefits local families through the Indiana County Community Action Program’s food pantries (ICCAP). Donations will be collected from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Valeski’s Fourth Street Bi-Lo, Wal-Mart, Big Lots, and McDonald’s restaurants in Indiana.

On Wednesday, April 29, the film, A Place at the Table, will be shown at 6:00 p.m. at the HUB. According to the film’s website, “A Place at the Table tells the powerful stories of Americans who maintain their dignity even as they struggle just to eat. In a riveting journey that will change forever how you think about the hungry, A Place at the Tableshows how the issue could be solved forever, once the American public decides—as they have in the past—that ending hunger is in the best interests of us all.”

On Friday, May 1, a poverty simulation activity will be held from 1:00 to 3:30 p.m. at the HUB. The simulation will expose participants to the realities of poverty by having them experience, through guided role play, some of the difficulties that the families of their students must navigate in order to survive on a low income. Participants in the poverty simulation must preregister at by emailing mswauger@iup.edu
