The Lively Arts at IUP is excited to present two educational outreach opportunities with the world-renowned Martha Graham Dance Companywhen they visit Indiana for a performance at Fisher Auditorium on Monday, March 2, 2015. A masterclass on the famed “Graham Technique” will be presented on Sunday, March 1, and a mini “Tech Workshop” will take place on Monday, March 2.
The masterclass will be held from 6:00–7:30 p.m. in the Zink Hall Dance Theater and features the senior artistic associate for the Martha Graham Dance Company, Denise Vale. Vale joined the Martha Graham Dance Company in 1985, attaining the rank of principal dancer. Roles performed include the Pioneer Woman in Appalachian Spring, Woman in White in Diversion of Angels, Chorus Leader in Night Journey, Chorus in Cave of the Heart, the Attendant in Hérodiade, Leader in the 1980s reconstruction of Steps in the Street, and Night Chant, a ballet created for Vale by Martha Graham in 1989. Graham solos performed include “Lamentation,” “Frontier,” “Satyric Festival Song,” and “Serenata Morisca.”
The participants for the masterclass are set and come from the community studios of Sue Hewitt Dance and Mary Strong Dance, as well as the IUP dance studio. However, any student interested in dance is invited and encouraged to audit the class. Those auditing are reminded that the dance studio theater space only allows water bottles with caps and no food.
The full Martha Graham Dance company will rehearse from 2:00 to 5:45 p.m. on Monday, March 2, in Fisher Auditorium. The entire rehearsal is open for students interested in the tech part of a dance production, but tech students interested in comments and interaction with the artistic director for Martha Graham Dance, Janet Eilber, should plan on being there at 5:00 p.m. for the rehearsal of their last piece, “Errand Into the Maze.” Eilber will meet with students in-house for a discussion focused on lighting design for professional dance during that piece, followed by a short question-and-answer session as time allows.
The outreach events are being held in conjunction with Essential Graham, a performance on the Lively ArtsOvations! series. A leader in the development of contemporary dance since its founding in 1926 by pioneering choreographer Martha Graham, the Company brings to life a timeless and uniquely American style of dance that has influenced generations of artists and continues to captivate audiences. The performance takes place on Monday, March 2, at 8:00 p.m. in Fisher Auditorium.
