The IUP Department of Music begins a weekend of band concerts on Friday, November 14 at 8:00 p.m. with the IUP Symphony and Concert Bands under the direction of Jason Worzbyt and Stephanie Caulder.
The concert is titled “Celebrating Our Own” and will feature IUP’s faculty brass quintet, the HoodleBug Brass, as well as IUP’s new clarinet professor, Rosemary Brumbelow, as soloists.
Saturday November 15, at 8:00 p.m. will feature a performance of the IUP Wind Ensemble and the University Chamber Singers, Chorale, and Chorus in a concert titled “Winds & Voices.” A highlight of the concert will be the world premiere of “Where the Good Sounds Live” by the Atlanta-based composer Alvin Singleton. Singleton will be in attendance. The work, written for concert band, was commissioned in memory of Myron Moss, Drexel University’s late band director. The band and choirs will join forces to perform selected works composers Dan Forrest, Jack Stamp, and Vincent Persichetti.
Concluding the weekend of performances will be the annual Bands in Review concert on Sunday, November 16, at 7:00 p.m. featuring the IUP Marching Band, “The Legend,” under the direction of David Martynuik, and joined by the Jazz Ensemble led by Kevin Eisensmith. The Jazz Ensemble will open the concert with an IUP classic, Roy Mitchell’s “Back Home Again.” The Jazz Ensemble will then feature compositions by Fred Sturm, Bob Mintzer, Dennis DiBlasio, Eric Richards, and IUP’s own Keith Young. Laura Ferguson will join the Jazz Ensemble for a performance of “Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea.”
The Marching Band will perform works from their 2014 season, including “The Roman Trilogy Suite,” “Fields of Gold,” and Pat Metheny’s “First Circle.” As always, the highlight of the performance will be the performance of “Amazing Grace” at the conclusion of the concert.
All three concerts will be in Fisher Auditorium, and tickets will be available at the door.
